At Halstead Community Primary School, we follow the Bexley Scheme of Work for Religious Education.

Statement of Intent

The aim of Religious Education is to encourage pupils to learn from different religions, beliefs, values and traditions within their community.

It enables the children to explore and formulate how these principals can be applied to their own lives to foster a sense understanding, 

empathy, care, friendship and cohesion within their community.

What is the purpose of RE?

∙ Is to provoke challenging questions about meaning and purpose in life, beliefs about God, ultimate reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human.

∙ Pupils will learn to evaluate wisdom from different sources, to develop and express their insights.

∙ The aim is to develop pupils’ aptitude for dialogue, so that they can participate positively in society.

Implementation

∙ Religious Education will be taught to all year groups following the Bexley Agreed Syllabus (2021).

∙ Opportunities will be provided to visit local places of worship and have visiting speakers to support the teaching of RE.

∙ Currently using the agreed syllabus 2021, it has been agreed that all pupils learn from Christianity in each key stage. In addition, pupils will learn from the principal religions, represented in the UK and their community.

∙ Furthermore, children from families where non-religious worldviews are held are represented in almost all of our classrooms. These worldviews, including for example Humanism, will also be the focus for study.

Impact will be measured by:

∙ Use of achievement descriptors which will be developed when the curriculum has been written

∙ Scrutiny of children’s work

∙ Lesson observation

∙ Pupil interviews

∙ Monitoring changes in attitude and behaviour across the school

Withdrawal from RE

At our school, Religious Education (RE) is an important part of the curriculum, encouraging pupils to explore a range of beliefs and worldviews. However, parents and carers have the legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of RE if they wish. If you are considering this option, please email your child’s class teacher via the office.
